SEA Shark & Ray Research and Conservation Workshop 2023
Our inaugural workshop in Singapore trained 35 shark and ray conservation practitioners and academics in key technical and leadership skills.
35 delegates from around Southeast Asia gathered in Singapore from September 25-29 2023 for our first regional capacity building workshop for shark and ray research and conservation.
Our curriculum covered
Research methods
From handling sharks and rays to tagging and telemetry, age and growth analysis to market surveys, our participants got hands-on training on several research methods to advance their research and understanding of shark and ray populations in the region.
Data analysis, management & reporting
Participants received highly sought-after training in R programming, learnt how to organise and analyse data and tips for managing and backing up data in the tropics.
Human dimensions of shark & ray research
A deep dive into human research ethics, researcher positionality, and the drivers and motivations of fisher communities. Social science techniques and navigating stakeholder relationships in complex social and cultural environments.
Professional Development & Leadership
Exploring the first tenant of leadership - self-management. Participants identified their skills and aspirations, risks of burn out, reflected on their personal missions and values, and crafted personal development plans.

Testimonials
“The last day was really impactful and it’s good that you speak about some of the things we don’t dare to talk about out loud. . . .”
"Asia is probably the most challenging region for shark conservation. Previously, there was no unified identity of shark conservation practitioners. This project has created that, and unified shark conservationists across multiple countries"
"This workshop turns out to be a lot more than I expected. All the mentors are experts in their field, understanding, full of positive energies and inclusive. For more, we developed a sense of friendship and a lot of talks about future collaborations that will be useful for small NGOs like us! Overall 10/10!!”
“This is the BEST workshop I have ever attended!”
